Green Talk: Eco-Friendly Cell Phones

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Okay, we know you’re doing your part to help out the planet: You’ve bought reusable shopping bags, ride your bike to work, and drink GIVE Love Water – what else could you possibly do? Ask your phone.

With the endless eco-friendly applications from a variety of smartphones, being green just got a little easier.

For The Droid, try out its ‘app’ LISTMAKER.  Blackberry is pulling in with an eco-friendly Battery Saver and a cool new GoGreen Theme. And the iPhone boasts  the Clear Standards Carbon Tracker and 3rdWhale—an app to find green businesses in your area, just to name a few.

And with technology growing every day, a completely green phone is just around the corner. Sharp and Japanese Network, KDDI, have developed a solar powered, waterproof cell phone made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. With only ten minutes of sunshine, a person can talk on the phone for a minute and have the phone on stand-by for a full two hours! Can’t get much better than that!

What are you favorite green apps? Please share!

Charity Spotlight: New York Restoration Project

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

NYC-ers (and everyone else), if you haven’t heard of New York Restoration Project yet, prepare to meet the area’s biggest advocate of urban planting. The group is “dedicated to reclaiming and restoring NYC parks, community gardens and open space.” And a fun fact: the organization was started by Bette Midler!

NYRP also spearheads the MillionTreesNYC initiative.  Supported by everyone from the Mayor’s office, to borough residents, it aims to have one million trees planted by 2015.  On June 8th, GIVE and several groups are supporting their fashion presentation fundraiser at the acclaimed Union Square Ballroom.

They’re “greening NYC one block at time” – How are you helping green your neighborhood? We’d love to hear about projects and groups in your area, so let us know!
